it's labour day back home. it is supposed to be a day to rest and relax as it is a public holiday. but my family arent having any holiday. grandma was admitted to the hospital today after behaving unusually all weekend. she hasnt been feeling all that well and very very breathless that she has been more or less confined in her own room all week. xd mentioned yesterday that grandma seemed rather confused as she had asked him if he had an older brother ( which he doesnt, cos xd only has sisters! ) and apparently grandma didnt even know which day of the week it was and if it was night or day... this sounds so much like stuff i learn at uni.. but it has been so hard to come to terms with the fact that my grandma is starting to behave like this. grandma has been rather stubborn and not wanting to go to see the doctor. she even refused to give my aunty her appointment card so that she could call the doctor. grandma keeps insititing that she will be ok, but she has been on her oxygen machine/ respirator all day... just so that she wont be so breathless. anyway, my aunt managed to get the appointment card somehow...and the doctor said it was an emergency! asked for grandma to be brought to the hospital on an ambulance immediately... but grandma refuses....so aunts and mummy follow grandma in the car and go straight to the A&E department of Mount Elizabeth...and grandma is immediately wheeled to icu. according to mummy, grandma's lungs arent working well. her lungs are filled with water. her body cant seem to get rid of the carbon dioxide, so the cells are starting to be hypoxic...and so is the body. even though grandma appears to be breathing in the oxygen, the carbon dioxide build up in her system is causing the breathlessness. and she cant really do any procedures as she is on a whole mix of medications.....and the risk of major complications (things going wrong) is really really high...
